About

THE COMMUNITY

Perquimans County is located in a rural section of northeastern North Carolina, bordered by Gates County on the north, Chowan County on the West, the Albemarle Sound on the south, and Pasquotank County and the Little River on the east.

Perquimans County was originally created as Berkeley Precinct and later named Perquimans Precinct around 1684 and gained county status in 1739. It lies 150 miles east of Raleigh and 75 miles northeast of Greenville, NC. According to the 2014 census, there are 13,466 residents. The county seat is Hertford. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total of 329 square miles of which 245 square miles is land and 82 square miles is water – 25%!

Small town charm, southern hospitality and lots of water make this area an “off the beaten path” gem. It is often overlooked for more well-known places such as the Outer Banks, but this area offers such attractions as local cafes, downtown eateries, historic sites and attractive store fronts. Today, many travelers visit Perquimans County. They find water sports, fishing, hunting and history. You can find the oldest existing brick house in the entire state and the first land deed of record in North Carolina located in Perquimans County.  Agriculture remains the principal industry, with corn, cotton, peanuts and soybeans as major crops. Boating, fishing, and hunting are favorite activities in Perquimans County.  Our county recreation department is a focal point of activities for old and young. Perquimans County actively supports several annual events, such as the Indian Summer Festival in September.

There are five townships in the county - Bethel, Belvidere, Hertford, New Hope and Parksville. Located along the Albemarle Highway (US Route 17), Perquimans County is approximately a one-hour drive from Hampton Roads, Virginia and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The popular Outer Banks area provides beach sunning, surf fishing, Gulf Stream fishing and outdoor drama. Both areas offer job opportunities, retail shopping, entertainment, recreation and a great source of services.
