Available to Graduating Seniors
These following scholarships are for high school seniors attending Perquimans High School. Deadline to apply for each scholarship is March 1st.
John & Betty Crawford Scholarship - An endowment for the John & Betty Crawford Scholarship was established in 2017 following a gift to the Foundation from the Trust of Dr. & Mrs. Crawford. The endow- ment will generate a $1,000 scholarship each year, beginning with the Graduating Class of 2018, that will be available to a graduating senior from Perquimans High School. Preference will be given to a student with limited financial resources and who is interested in pur- suing a community college or university degree in basic science and who plans to enter the medical field.
Thelma A. Finch-Copeland Scholarship - Perquimans County High School alumni Johnnie L. Finch, Jr., Esquire honors his mother, Thelma A. Finch-Copeland, with a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving PCHS graduating senior who plans to major in early childhood education. The application must be a male and must have at least at 3.0 GPA.
Thelma Finch (now Copeland) was an educator for more than 33 years before retiring in 2012. She was an Early Childhood Educator at Perquimans Central School where her presence was always warm, inviting and energetic. She was well aware that a child's early years would lay the foundation for all that was to come for them -- and she took that charge very seriously.
Esther Winslow Markham Scholarship - This $500 scholarship is named for a 1945 graduate of Perquimans County High School and is sponsored by Doug Markham. This award is given to one graduating senior with preference in the following order: (1) to a student intending to enroll at UNC-Chapel Hill; (2) to a student intending to enroll at Guilford College; (3) to a student intending to enroll at Duke University; (4) to a student intending to study nursing.
Waldo Winslow Scholarship - This $500 scholarship is named for a 1962 graduate of Perquimans County High School and is sponsored by Doug Markham. This award is given to one graduating senior with preference in the following order: (1) to a student intending to enroll at North Carolina State University in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (2) to any other student intending to enroll at North Carolina State University.
Perquimans County Rescue Squad - This $500 scholarship is available to any graduating senior from PCHS that will be furthering their education in the medical field and has maintained a “C” average throughout their high school tenure. The applicant must be accepted to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university.
The applicant must be involved in the community or volunteer in a community organization within Perquimans County.
The applicant must complete 48 hours in our Ride Along Program that is offered from 6 pm to 6 am within the year that you receive the scholarship to have a better understanding of our organization and this aspect of the medical field.
Bessie Smith Harrell Scholarship – The Bessie Smith Harrell Scholarship of $500 is given in honor of Bessie Smith Harrell, a native and lifelong resident of Perquimans County, who passed away in 2004. The intent of the donor, David Jordan, is that this award will encourage studying basic or applied fields of science by students. Recipients are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and character.
Christopher Todd Conway Student-Athlete Scholarship – The Christopher Todd Conway Student-Athlete Scholarship is an opportunity for the PCHS Graduating Class beginning in 2016. Better known as Chris Conway to his family and friends, he lost his battle to cancer at the age of 39 in January 2016. Chris was a talented baseball player earning a baseball scholarship to Barton College. Later he leveraged those skills coaching for sports team in Perquimans County. Prior to his death, he made his wishes known that he would like to offer a $500 scholarship to assist a baseball player realize his dream to attend college.
Rhonda Gregory Business Scholarship – This $1,000 scholarship is a scholarship sponsored by Danny and Rhonda Gregory and is offered to a PCHS senior planning to attend College of the Albemarle and entering the field of business. Recipients are selected based on financial need and academic standards.
Veronica "Ronnie" Skinner Darden Scholarship – This $500 scholarship is given in memory of Veronica "Ronnie" Skinner Darden, a former student of Perquimans County High School, who was treasured by the community, her colleagues at the NC Department of Public Safety, as well as her family and friends. The scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2018. Ronnie passed away in 2017 while serving as a Correction Enterprise Manager with the NC Department of Public Safety -Division of Prisons for ten years.
The scholarship is available to a student with limited financial resources who is interested in pursuing a college or university degree at College of the Albemarle or Elizabeth City State University in a career or field that will be helping/serving others. The selection of the recipient is based on scholastic achievement, community service, financial need and character.
Bogue Scholarship – The Bogue Scholarship of $2,500 is given by Mr. and Mrs. William A. Bogue, Jr. in memory of his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Bogue, aunts Margaret B. Butler and Edith B. Spivey, and all the descendents of the first William Bogue of Perquimans who have called Perquimans County their home for more than 300 years.
Eugene Rountree, Sr. Scholarship – This $500 scholarship in memory of Eugene Rountree, Sr. is sponsored by the Inter-County Volunteer Fire Department and is available to a high school student. Mr. Rountree was a charter member and retired Fire Chief of the Inter-County Volunteer Fire Department with more than four decades of service.
Perquimans County Schools Foundation Scholarship - The Perquimans County Schools Foundation selects one student each year to award a $1,000 scholarship which is renewable for the four years recipient is in college. Recipients are selected based on academic standards, community service and character.
Walker and Marjorie Rayburn Scholarship – The purpose of the Walker and Marjorie Rayburn Scholarship is to give an opportunity for a graduate of Perquimans County High School to attend a college away from home, who would otherwise not be likely to do so. This is intended to be a need based scholarship and is $5,000 for four years ($20,000) for a qualifying student. The applicant should have a 3.0 GPA. The applicant must attach a school provided transcript with an attendance record. A list of extracurricular activities and community activities must be provided with a description of the role played by the applicant in each of the activities.
Thomas and Mary Chapley Scholarship - This $5,000 scholarship is given by Thomas and Mary Chapley to assist a PCHS graduate entering college (graduate must be accepted/attend a 4-year college or university located at least 50 miles from Hertford, North Carolina). Applicant must be a resident of Perquimans County, have a GPA of 3.0 or above, with financial need as a consideration.
William Steve and Sharon Spies Lane Scholarship - This $1,500 scholarship is given by William Steve and Sharon Spies Lane to one male and one female recipient to assist a PCHS student (or prior recipient) in attending College of The Albemarle. Applicant must be a resident of Perquimans County, have a GPA of 3.0 or above with a financial need. A letter describing your field of interest, high school transcript, a list of honors and extracurricular activities and one letter of reference is required.
Perquimans Arts League / Suzanne Towe Haste Merit Award - This $500 scholarship is sponsored by The Perquimans Arts League and pays tribute to Suzanne Towe Haste and is known as the Suzanne Towe Haste Merit Award and Exhibit, for high school seniors and juniors, residing in Perquimans County.
The Merit award recognizes students of outstanding ability who will be majoring in the Arts in college or have applied to a summer pro- gram or camp for the Arts. This award is made to applicants without regard to financial need. All applicants will participate in an Exhibit, to take place at the Perquimans Arts League Gallery.
Emmett Long Scholarship - The Emmett B. Long Education Scholarship is made available to a student attending Perquimans County High School with a "C" average or better, who is active in the community and has a strong desire to further his/her education. The Emmett B. Long Education Scholarship is valued at $750 and is a renewable scholarship sponsored by Madelyn P. Long.
Jeanne C. White Educational Scholarship - This $500 scholarship is available to a Perquimans County High School graduating senior (male or female) and is provided by the Jeanne Chappell White Educational Endowment.
Preference will be given to a student with limited financial resources interested in pursuing a community college or university degree. Selection of the recipient will be based on scholastic achievement, community service, character and financial need.
Madelyn Marie Byrum (Those Who Give Back) Scholarship - This $500 scholarship was available for the first time in June 2017. It is awarded to a PCHS graduating senior who exemplifies the importance of academics and the value of having a heart for serving and helping others.
Selection of this recipient will be based on academics, his or her passion for sports and the fact the individual is noted for helping others at the high school and in the community throughout their tenure as a student at Perquimans High School. The scholarship is given in memory of Madelyn Byrum who was loved and well-known for thinking of others before herself.
Janice McKenzie Cole Mentoring Scholarship - This $1,000 scholarship was available for the first time in June 2017 and is sponsored by Kyle Jones and others who were mentored by Mrs. Cole.
The scholarship is named in honor of Perquimans County resident Janice McKenzie Cole, the first African American and the first female to serve as a District Court Judge in the First Judicial District of North Carolina.
The Honorable Cole also served for six years on the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners, four of them as the chairperson.
During her career, Mrs. Cole has mentored many young attorneys and professionals. The intent of the donors of this scholarship is to en- courage college-bound seniors to invest in the lives and education of younger students through mentoring. Applicants must be female residents of Perquimans County, have a 3.0 GPA, be on track to attend a four-year university with an intended major/career interest in the social sciences, and express a desire to mentor younger students.
