SUPERINTENDENT POSITION VACANCY AND SEARCH

The Perquimans County Board of Education is seeking a superintendent to lead the school
system as it continues its pursuit of excellence. Candidates must meet the legal requirements to
be licensed as a superintendent in North Carolina or be qualified to serve under the State Board
of Education’s alternative guidelines. Central office and building-level administrator experience
are preferred. A doctorate degree or progress toward a doctorate degree is preferred. A successful
candidate will be required to live in the Perquimans County School District. The application

A successful candidate must demonstrate ability and success in (1) visionary educational
leadership; (2) curriculum and instruction; (3) goal setting and monitoring achievement; (4)
fostering community and/or intergovernmental partnerships; (5) administration and organization
of short-term and long-term strategic planning, budgeting, and personnel and facility
management; (6) strong communication and effective team-building; (7) visibility and
involvement in community activities; (8) leadership in maintaining safe and orderly school
environments; (9) planning and funding of school facilities; and (10) decision making,
delegation, and follow-through.
The Perquimans County Board of Education consists of six members elected to four-year
staggered terms. The school system serves 1800 students in prekindergarten through twelfth
grade. The district operates four schools (Perquimans Central, Hertford Grammar, Perquimans
Middle and Perquimans High School). The district is currently in the construction phase for a
new state-of-the-art Perquimans County Intermediate School which is expected to open in Fall
2026. The school system is proud of its continuous improvement, community-wide focus on

Perquimans County is located in a rural section of northeastern North Carolina, bordered by
Gates County on the north, Chowan County on the West, the Albemarle Sound on the south, and
Pasquotank County and the Little River on the east. Perquimans County Schools is located
seventy-two miles from East Carolina University and eighteen miles from Elizabeth City State
University.  These two universities along with College of the Albemarle have been supportive
collaborative partners of our school system.  Other local community programs that support our
school system each day are the Hertford Rotary Club, Ruritan Clubs, Ministers’ Council for
Education, the Perquimans County Schools Foundation, the Albemarle Plantation service and
scholarship programs, the Chamber of Commerce and many other local businesses. 
After the application deadline, application material will be reviewed by members of the
Perquimans County Board of Education for review. The search will continue until the position is
filled.

Application material will be treated confidentially. By law, the board may not publicly release
any of the application information without consent from the applicant. Thus, applicant
information will not be released beyond the members of the Perquimans County Board of
Education and the board attorney. The board also may need to contact references and conduct
